FaBOOlous DIY: Skeleton Bones Sweatshirt Inspired by McQueen

I must confess Halloween is my least favorite holiday of the year… don’t judge me! Thanksgiving is my favorite obviously because it’s all about food, family, friends and football. So needless to say creating a Halloween costume is not my top priority. This DIY project is perfect for those of you out there that, like me, are less than thrilled about the idea of Halloween costumes. You can still feel festive in this glitter sweater inspired by the late great Alexander McQueen’s love of skulls and bones.

Materials: Sweatshirt, Glitter, Skeleton Stencil, Glue, Brush

Tracking down a skeleton stencil proved to be a major problem for me, but as they say, “if at first you don’t succeed…make your yourself.” Ok that don’t actually say that, but making my own skeleton stencil is a piece of cake. I found an outline of a skeleton that I liked online (click here for the image). Then I headed to my nearest Kinkos where I used their copier to blow up the image and print it at the desired size. Once I returned to my studio, I took out my exacto knife and cut out the image making the perfect stencil. Total cost was 15 cents which was much cheaper than any stencil I would have bought from a craft store!

Apply glue to the sweatshirt through the holes in the stencil

Add glitter! Lots and lots of glitter!

Remove stencil and voila!

This reminds me of the Walt Disney Dancing Skeleton short. Do you guys remember that? (Click here to watch it out on YouTube.) My grandmother had a VHS of vintage Disney shorts that I would watch when I visited at her house as a little girl. This movie is also part of the reason why I’m not much of a fan of Halloween. It scared the living daylights out of me and played into my fear of the dark.
