DIY: Framed Fish Tank

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - AquariumI’ve been wanting to get a pet for some time now.  I figured a fish would be a great starter pet! Plus a colorful Betta is a great and inexpensive way to add a little color to a room without pulling out the paint brush. I wanted a really decorative tank for my fish to live in. Since I always feel like I’m in an art museum when I stare at my Betta, I thought framing the tank would be a fun and creative idea to display my new moving art piece.

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - Aquarium MATERIALSMaterials: Rectangular Tank, Picture Frame, Mounting Tape, Aquarium Rocks, Aquarium Decor

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - Aquarium TAPERemove the back of your frame and apply your mounting tape.

Tip: Your picture frame should be the same size as your tank. A rectangular vase that you find at your local craft or floral store will make a great tank. Just be sure it’s at lease 2 -3 inches deep to give your fish wiggle room.

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - Aquarium MOUNTMount the frame to your tank.

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - Aquarium FILLDecorate the inside of your tank with rocks, greenery or whatever aquatic decor that catches your eye. Remember this is the “picture” that will be visible in your frame so have fun with it!

Glitter 'N Glue DIY Framed Fish Tank - Aquarium BETTAMy new fish really seems to be enjoying his new home. It’s bigger than that little bowl he’s been living in for the past few weeks and the plastic plant is quickly becoming his new BFF! Now it’s time to name him…

What should I name my new fish? If it were up to me I’d name him Elton, but thank goodness it’s not… I’m leaving it up to you guys! Leave any name suggestions in the comment section below and I’ll pick my favorite. If your name is chosen I’ll send you a little gift in appreciation! xo

This tutorial makes me want to get a fish too – I’m sure my cats would love it if I got a little fishy, but I don’t think the fish would last for long! x

  32. I love this! Now I want a beta fish so I can do this! Not sure how my cat would feel though… hmmm. I had a friend that had a beta fish and we named him Fred. He lived for a super long time too. Like, way longer than any beta fish usually lives. So maybe it’s a lucky name.

    April 8, 2013 at 12:15 pm

  33. Now I want a beta fish! Not sure how my cat would feel about that though… hmmmm. A friend of mine said all he wanted was a gold fish named Fred so for his birthday we gave him an orange beta named Fred. He lived a looooooong life and was a pretty cool fish. So when I see betas I automatically think Fred.

Lovely fishy! First name that comes up to my mind is Nemo 🙂 I hope you added afterwards a water filter for the little guy.

    April 8, 2013 at 1:53 pm

    • Thanks! Nemo is such a fun name. Thanks for the submission. Betta fish don’t need a filtration system. I just have to change his water once a week. But he really seems to be enjoying his new space! xoxo

This is such a cute idea! What a great way to spice up a room. I definitely want to do this soon, although I fear I would forget the fish were in there! This is so creative and easy, which is a major reason why I like this blog. Sometimes blogs with DIY projects are too complicated for the average gal. This is clever, cute and simple! On top of that, it’s relatively inexpensive. Thanks for the idea, I will be using this one in the future!

  46. I just made one these tanks!!! It is the cutest thing ever!!! Now I just gotta buy a fish and decor… and decide on a fish name too! You should name your fish Iris. I named my blue car Iris b/c of the color.

  47. This kind of makes me want a Betta. I absolutely love this idea!
My daughter had a Betta a few years ago, I forget what SHE named him, but my husband and I always called him Sushi! You know, because he is a raw fish…..

(Although I have to say, I see nothing wrong with Elton, personally. If it is after Elton John, it suits. Elton John is a flashy guy, Bettas are flashy fish.)
