DIY: Ombre Straw Hat

Did I mention I’m heading to Hawaii for a little birthday celebration/ vacation? Yep, I’m 3 weeks away for basking in the Hawaiian sun and chasing down dudes on the beach that look like Dwayne Johnson’s twin. With that said, it’s time to start planning my vacation wardrobe. From the second I saw the ombre dyed hats from the Chanel Resort 2013 collection (image –> here) I knew I had to make one for my vacation. It’s an easy way to add a little color to last Summer’s basic straw hat.

Materials: Rit Dye, Straw Sun Hat (available at Forever 21)

Each brand of dye may vary, so be sure to follow the directions provide with your dye to insure the most accurate color.

Ombre dying is done in sections. Immerse half of the hat’s brim into the dye bath for 5 minutes. Remove the hat and then re-dip the bottom of the hat in the dye for about 10 minutes. Remember the longer you leave the hat in the dye the darker the color. I always refer to the Rit Dye blog for a details ombre tutorial.

Ombre!

Vacation countdown has officially begun! Be sure you’re following me on Twitter (here) and Instagram (here) for all my Hawaii updates.

PS: I’ve never been to Hawaii before so I’m open to suggestion on what to do and where to eat while I’m there. Be sure to tweet me any recommendations!

These days it seems my hair is too big to fit into hats, but seeing this tutorial makes me hopeful that I can possibly fit my hair into this one. 😉
